The science fiction series Space Above and Beyond, which enjoyed a brief run in the 1995-96 season, was created by X-Files & Millennium producers Glen Morgan and James Wong as a revision of the classic war series Combat! with heavy influence from Robert Heinlein's classic novel Starship Troopers.
Set in 2063, Space Above and Beyond follows the adventures of five inexperienced Marines of the 58th Squadron, who are involved in a war against the Chigs, a race of aliens bent on conquering the Earth. Morgan and Wong gave their main characters intriguing personalities - Nathan West (Morgan Weisser) has joined the Marines to save a girlfriend captured by the aliens, while Rodney Rowland's Cooper is an artificially created human whose service is inspired by a desire to escape the violent prejudice he faces on Earth.
The action and stories are gritty and dramatic, and put a fresh spin on traditional wartime stories - highlights include "The Enemy," in which the 58th is stranded behind enemy lines; "Toy Soldiers," in which West's younger brother is serving under a dangerously reckless lieutenant; and the two-part "If They Lay Us Down to Rest…" and "Tell Our Moms We Done Our Best," which brought the series to a close with the Earth on the verge of peace talks with the aliens as the military launches a perilous operation.

spudthedestroyer wrote:The reason I dig this up now is because I read in an article in an old copy of fangoria, that the shows creators were the writers behind all of the best episodes of The X-files (Tooms et. al), so I'd thought I'd give it a shot. All I can remember was it was very weird and military for a scifi show. I also did some digging and the two writers I mentioned are very fan favourites/well known. It was cancelled after one series despite having large viewing figures (they used declining figures as a justification), and entering as the highest ranking tv show in the uk that month when aired. If its any justice, the executives behind the decision apparantly got fired shortly afterwards.

Yes, one of my old favorites. Another show killed in it's prime. I used to request that night off so I could see it back in the day. Yeah, they did write some for X-Files, good ones. It was a weird military show cause it seemed there was only 1 military, no Army/Navy/Air Force. Only 1 season totally pissed me off, cause they ened up rushing that last 2 eps & leave the show open ended. Maybe in hopes to come back to it.

Unfortunately those arses weren't fired soon enough as it didn't save/bring back this great piece of TV SciFi.

I'm going past GO, not picking up £200, not DLing the rips, and going straight to the DVD shop to buy my copy when it comes out over here in UK. At least I can delete the really bad quality TV rips from ages ago off my hard drive.

If you have never watched this series you should. Its got chigs, Top Cat McQueen, a delta-blues playing commodore, and will introduce some of you to Patsy Cline & Johnny Cash (and thats BOTH types of music!). Its up there with Odyssey 5 and Firefly for TV series most hideously cancelled.

It says that the show took a lot from Heinlein's Starship Troopers, but I think its actually a lot closer to 'The Forever War' (by same author). If you're looking for a good sci-fi book you could read that too :).
