The Atomic Cafe (1982)

Disturbing collection of 1960s United States government issued propaganda films designed to reassure Americans that the atomic bomb was not a threat to their safety

The Atomic Cafe was produced, directed, edited and researched over a five-year period by Jayne Loader, Kevin Rafferty, and Pierce Rafferty through their production company, The Archives Project, Inc., and released by the filmmakers in March of 1982 to near-unanimous critical and public acclaim.

Vincent Canby of the New York Times raved: "A stunner, a movie that has one howling with laughter, horror and disbelief." The Washington Post called it "the blackest apocalyptic humor since Dr. Strangelove." J. Hoberman of the Village Voice dubbed it "one of the best films of the year. A comic horror film, it does more to evoke the what-me-worry social madness of the Cold War than any documentary I've ever seen."

The Atomic Cafe is a lighthearted look at nuclear war, produced during the height of the Cold War entirely using stock footage from the 1940s and 1950s. It's a gimmick, but it's a good one -- as the look back at such uniquely American moments as pre-fab bomb shelters, "Duck... and cover!" and the perils of radiation sickness (Your hair will return, the same color as before!) make for chuckle-worthy and sobering experiences.
