Alien is better than Aliens imo. I'm partial to Brazil though. Excellent film :) Blade Runner is top class, but it would have to sit around 3rd excluding Empire Strikes Back (how can you be so cruel to exclude Star Wars?)

what? no one mentions Star Trek: Generations? ID4? :wacky:

Aside from The Trilogy, I'll go with T2 or maybe Robocop (even though it's cheesey now, I think I rented it 20 times in a 5 year span).

Alien is tough cuz I always think of it as horror - real, scary</i> horror, not like Evil Dead or Showgirls :-o

Ditto, but its sci-fi too, so i normally put it in both lists.

Anyway, my favourites are:
Empire Strikes Back
Brazil
Alien
A Clockwork Orange
--- > looses its ordering round about here , Empire is my favourite, so not including the Trilogy, its followed very closely by Brazil. Alien is a great horror film and that's up at the top too. :)
Blade Runner
Dr. Strangelove (Sci-fi, but not overly)
Jabberwocky
Akira
The Thing
Aliens

Westworld, Robocop, Star Wars, Jedi, Andromeda Strain, Soylent Green etc. are definitely in there too.

maybe Robocop (even though it's cheesey now)

I think that was its whole point, just like Starship Troopers. By totally desensitising violence, making it cheesey and corny it acheives its end a lot more. Both are solid 4* movies imo :)

Very good sci-fi, but what do you think of Gilliam's other baby, Brazil? 12 Monkey's gets the stick for the same reason Brazil does, its quite hard going. I think 12m is a great movie, and certainly one I rate pretty highly, but I love Brazil and think its Gilliam's best. I'd probably also go for Jabberwocky over 12m, but that's cos I have to make a crazey choice somewhere :)

I don't necessarily agree with it, but I find the top 10 acceptable - there's nothing wrong</i> with what's there. I would have used a few spots differently:

donnie darko is cool, but look where Terminator is.

Eternal Sunshine... also isn't one that screams "sci-fi!" to me, but I suppose it is as sci-fi as Gattaca, which is your standard Brave New World plot. Still, I would have gone for more robots 'n' aliens movies first.

Matrix is understandable in the top 10, but I think 4 is a bit high.

Prefer Spaceballs over Young Frankenstein.

And two old Frankenstein movies is two too many for my "modern" aesthetic.

X2 and Minority Report were solid flicks, but they prolly don't belong in the top 25 - more in the area of 40-50. They shouldn't be ahead of Equillibrium, for example.

Not seen 3, I think Donnie Darko is way, way overrated; its an entertaining film, but it gets far more than it deserves imo. Matrix should be maybe 9 in such a public demographic, it wouldn't come in my top 10 for sure ;) . The absense of Brazil is not a shock and understandable given its hardgoing nature. Episode IV at number one I think is inaccurate, people will have voted based on the star wars trilogy, rather than the first film in isolation. I think Empire is the clear 'better'. They are tied on score I suppose.

X2 in the top xyz is laughable, its an okay film, but not great.

Some of the stuff I wouldn't put in scifi though... night of the living dead, although understandble, I'd say should be classified under horror rather than scifi, unlike Alien, its scifi nature its really as present or important. A purest would have to strike that one off the list. I'm glad to see truman show mentioned, I really liked that movie and it is one of the essential sci-fi movies I'd list given 50 movies.

I think that list is surprisingly 'good', given the fact that the imdb "I'm a tool" mainstream userbase have voted for it.

Stuff like Barbarella are too culty to be highly rated.
