Blade Runner tops scientist poll

Eminent world scientists have voted Ridley Scott's Blade Runner the best science fiction film to date. The 1982 movie, in which retired cop Harrison Ford hunts four renegade human replicants, came top in a poll of 60 scientists by the Guardian newspaper.

The film was loosely based on the Philip K Dick short story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and is set in a dystopian futuristic vision of Los Angeles.

Stephen Minger, from King's College, London, said: "Blade Runner is the best movie ever made.

"It was so far ahead of its time and the whole premise of the story - what is it to be human and who are we, where we come from? It's the age-old questions."

Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey came second, with Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back taking third place.

SCIENTISTS' TOP 10 SCI-FI FILMS
1. Blade Runner (1982)
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
3. Star Wars (1977)/Empire Strikes Back (1980)
4. Alien (1979)
5. Solaris (1972)
6. Terminator (1984)/T2: Judgement Day (1991)
7. Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
8. War of the Worlds (1953)
9. The Matrix (1999)
10. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

Favourite authors

The scientists were also asked by the Guardian to vote for their favourite authors.

Isaac Asimov headed the list for his novel I, Robot - which has just been made into a film starring Will Smith - and the Foundation Trilogy.

Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham was also a favourite, as was Fred Hoyle's The Black Cloud.

Other writers in the top 10 included Arthur C Clarke, Ursula le Guin, Philip K Dick, Ray Bradbury, Frank Herbert and Stanislaw Lem.

you should be dragged into the streets, publically flooged then thrown naked into a pit that contains dinky and lots of lubricant for that remark, anime isnt a patch on bladerunner, especially ghost in the shell, the only good anime is the show "Mazinga Z"

:o

Now look here you little diaper shit !

That had better be sarcasm ! :battle:

You were probably one of those 8 out of ten people who watched GITS and didn't have a clue what ran over them :moon:

GITS is even deeper and more depressing than Blade runner.....granted it may have borrowed a few ideas....but expanded on them....
Where blade runer stops drivelling over dreams......GITS actually tries to tackle sentience itself..... 8)

Back to topic......what the hell is t2 doing in there ?
Sure it's still lovely eyecandy....but I thought this was a serious list :wacky:

That's correct.
Japanese Comics = Manga.

That's not Manga you fool, that's Anime.
Japanese Animation = Anime.

I have 2 friends that love Manga & Anime. One has more Manga than I have comics. The other has more Anime than I have movies (more crap than I'd try to watch).

as much fun as it is to needle max, I think we're losing sight of what's really important in this discussion:

I'll just ignore that condescending generalization.......
Yeah a lot of anime is crap......guess they took over some bad habits from american live action cinema :P

You don't want to watch GITS ...hey....your loss.....

Now as for blade runner.....

I just rate GITS higher for being deeper , realistic and not being too vague for interpretation (READ: being able to claim deeper philosophical meanings for/in a scene that you didn't intent to include in the first place...but claim you did after someone found a brilliant alternative way to interpret a vague scene....)
(Yeah , I just dared to throw a rotten egg in Scott's direction :P )

Blade runner is already looking like the next Metropolis (not the anime you baffoon !) , reality having caught up with it.....
GITS , with the exeption of those annoying mecha-tanks-which-those-japanese-just-can't-seem-to-keep-themselves-from-putting-them-in-every-G*DAMN-movie , is a realistic nightmare, due to hit us in oh ,say 50-100 years (assuming some texan arse doesn't blow up the world) ....
...
Now I deserved some coffee for typing all this
