Red Dwarf Series 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 (DVDR)

After refusing to disclose the location of his contraband pet cat, David Lister was put into the stasis brig for the remainder of the mining ship Red Dwarf's scheduled voyage. When he awakens, Lister finds that 3 million years have passed, the entire crew has been reduced to talcum powder, his cat has evolved an entire civilization in the cargo hold, and his only company is a holographic representation of Arnold Rimmer, his bunkmate and the most anal retentive man in the Universe. So begins the saga of Red Dwarf, one of the most hysterical shows ever to come out of England. Eight seasons and an in-production movie later, Red Dwarf has become an international phenomenon. And finally it's on DVD.

We must remember that Red Dwarf was shot on analog video some 15 years ago, on a budget of approximately 6 peanut shells and a walnut. Therefore, the video quality is not what most would call stellar. However, I honestly don't expect the show could possibly look any better than presented on this DVD, frankly, I don't think the master tapes look much better than this. Once you reach Series 2, the video takes a very noticeable jump in quality, along with the whole show's much higher production values. All in all, Red Dwarf looks as solid as any other show for the most part.

SERIES THREE

Image

Features

Red Dwarf, Series 3 two-disc set maintains the high standard of presentation and wealth of extra material established by its predecessors. Among other delights there are the usual "Smeg Ups" and deleted scenes, plus another fun commentary with the cast. There's a lengthy documentary, "All Change", specifically about Series 3, a tribute to costume designer Mel Bibby, Hattie Hayridge's convention video diary, and--most fascinating--the opportunity to watch "Backwards" played forwards, so you can finally understand what Arthur Smith's backwards-talking pub manager actually says to Rimmer and Kryten in the dressing room.

SERIES FOUR

Image

Features

By the end of this fourth year, Red Dwarf had completed its metamorphosis from a modest studio-bound sitcom with a futuristic premise to a full-blown science-fiction series, complete with a relatively lavish (by BBC standards) special-effects budget, more impressive sets and more location shooting. Despite the heavier emphasis on SF, the character-based comedy remained as sharp as ever. Witness the Cat's reaction to Lister's pus-filled exploding head; Kryten's devastatingly sarcastic defence of Rimmer; or, the classic scene that opens the series, Lister teaching Kryten to lie.

Well I can vogue for the retail dvds, which imo your better of buying since not only is this series excellent, these are without a shadow of a doubt, the most comprehensive, lovingly made DVDs your ever likely to see.

The people who made these disks obviously enjoy and love Red Dwarf as much as the fans.

Commentries are awesome, documentries are unmissable.

Best DVDs I own, and IMO made to date.

For the sake of a pittance of disc space, I don't think the ripper would have dropped the subs but who knows.

@d0c, any chance of some details on what's been done here?

ie. Re-encoded with CCE? Transcoded? Streams dropped? Menus dropped?

Whatevers done, there's going to be a great loss in quality I'd imagine, since the DVDs are packed full. Better of buying would be my recommendation here :)

English subtitles are on the dvd, but it looks like they're for the hearing impaired.

Spud is right about the loss of quality. Just watched the first episode of season V and the leader was blocky as hell. The episode itself was fine, but indeed you'd be better of buying the dvd...

Yes, I watched it on saturday when it arrived. Not ripping it though, since I don't have the bandwidth for another series.

ps. amazon.co.uk? What's wrong with www.cd-wow.com :)

amazon.co.uk:
£12.99 + p&p ~ £3 = £15.99

Play.com:
£14.99 (inc p&p)

CD-wow.com
£12.99 (inc p&p)

plus if your sneaky, there's a £2 discount on cd-wow, so you can get Red Dwarf Series 6 for £10.99 delivered.

CD-wow.com is the cheapest, and if you want the £2 discount, see the sticky @ forum.dead-donkey.com in the smalltalk section :)
