Awesome pooper :beerchug:

But is 1.46gb for this necessary? Plus the cropping is off a bit, or is it just me? :?

I think a proper 1/6 dvd of this would be better  and I'd definitely grab it since the existing 1cd rip is divx5 and badly cropped :(

Well other releasers release B&W movies at 1/3 AFS ... don't they ...

I prefer to do 1/3 now regardless wether it's necessary or not for the quality aspect (the 1cd DivX says it all) ... a 1/6 would start to produce blockiness on motion scenes me thinks ... :)

Lux Delux wrote:Plus the cropping is off a bit, or is it just me? :?

The DVD doesn't state the ratio but GSpot's very close with 1.32:1 (actual is 1.33:1) ... when compared to the movie THEM! (stated on DVD that ratio is 1.33:1 and the res is also 720x544) then The Wraith is very close ... not only that you do have what is called a 'Safe Zone' when watching video content on the TV ... it's a square 5% in tolerence in addition to the TV viewing area ... any miss cropping would be eliminated by this Zone ...

Lux Delux wrote:I think a proper 1/6 dvd of this would be better  and I'd definitely grab it since the existing 1cd rip is divx5 and badly cropped :(

After collecting a sh!t load of 1CD versions of movies out there (2000+) I must say that most are good quality but the audio suffers (or the other way round) or they are outta sync ... so I thought bollox I'll do them myself ... so by doing 1/3 AFS you basically get what's on the original DVD ...

I'm not great ripper (I'm still learning) ... all these latest releases are completely new to me ... never done them before (still using AutoGK btw) but I'm more than happy with my own releases than I am with the 1CD versions out there ... they're pretty good quality & they're in sync ... also I'm only passing these onto you guys as I rip my collection ... :D

Basically ... Yes ... No ... & No ...
I wasn't ranting just explaining why I do it that way ... :beerchug:

P.S MODs: Why's this movie in the Lower Quality section ? ... if it's a DVDRip and it's close to the original DVD then the quality must be High ... you can't blame the DVD for that ... also that's saying to someone (who's looking for a bloody good rip of the movie) "that can't be it coz it's thrown in the Sh!t pile" ...

You won't get a better DVD version of this movie ... :wacky: ... High Quality should mean near as damn it to the original ...

Maybe this PS needs moving to General ... :D

I presume it was moved because of bad cropping... Don't know if you use Gordian Knot, but I think that you could do a great looking 1/6 dvd with it.

 Firstly by playing with the cropping a bit and then by picking a resolution which would maintain a good Aspect Error ratio, let's say the closer to 0.0% the better

By looking at the screens of the AFS rip, I presume the DVD picture itself isn't all that shiny, so a smaller resolution, audio at about 128kb/s vbr would make it basically look awesome as a 745mb rip, and especially since the length is only 92 mins...

Im also a pretty fresh ripper, but what I understood is that most AFS rips are being made to provide both great picture and great audio. For example 448 or 384 AC3 sound (so it stays the same as on DVD) and a good bitrate ranging from about 1500-1800 kb/s...

Yeah, I know IM probably talkin shit here
 but tomorrow Im going to sea so I thought to rant a bit

I do AFS only if the extra mb can help out in maintaining a combination of awesome audio+video... Other than that, I go for MP3 VBR audio and a solid bitrate at 745mb size which usually result in good looking rips..

For excample, here's a screen from my latest 1/6 dvd release:

Image

I could have easily done an AFS rip with higher audio, but it would be major overkill, since the movie is about 90 minutes ... :beerchug: :beerchug:

To think I thought of doing a 2cd version of Troll 2 :wacky: Thanks to Spud, grInd and all who helped me learn that bigger doesn't mean better :P

Yeah you're right it's not shiny ... 128Kbs is a bit small for explosions & stuff ... my ideal rate would be 192kbs (as with music) that's the lowest I would go ... even though you're still missing a lot of noise ... :)

Well I don't understand why ppl would want MP3 then ... AC3 audio can take a chunk of 200-450Mb easy for audio ... so really you're only left with approx 1Gb for the video ... it's only 250Mb more than a 746Mb rip & about 100-250 kbs extra on the Video rate ...

I understand that if it's a shit movie then you wouldn't bother with AC3 but that goes against the grain of doing AFS (or so I thought) ... I wouldn't want to change the audio quality coz that normally ends up distorting it or making a mess altogether ...

Ok ... we're back up a few paragraphs with that one ... :)

Spud told me that the whole point of AFS is to better the quality of the KNOWN releasers and make them better ... I get confused sometimes ... :)

I hear what you're saying mate and I'd love to sit and have a pint & talk bollox about this (my mates are all builders, plumbs, sparkys or gardners ... no techies really) so I rely on friends here heading me up

I'll have a go at a 746Mb just for curiousity ... :D

Oh yeah I do use Gordian Knot but the 'Auto' version ... need time to spend learning the 'Manual Way' ... :beerchug:

Sh!t this is getting LARGE ... can someone please move ALL of the PS bits & replies to General please with a heading like 'When to AFS or NOT' ...

Yes, sorry. I didn't leave a note, my bad.

if it's a DVDRip and it's close to the original DVD then the quality must be High

The sections are called higher quality and lower quality on purpose, if the DVD doesn't look too hot then they go in lower. I have several dvds, retail dvds, that you can see the vhs scan lines on ;) The split is relative to the source as well as the rip. Largely users are left to their own discression on posting, some people are brutally critical of the source others are forgiving, but if there's a technical flaw then moderators will move them. At a point there was contemplation of higher, lower, and nuked, but this was a bit discourteous. Read through the stickies here, and the more comprehensive ones at forum, the distinction is quite clear I hope.

Its called higher quality and lower quality. Not high quality and shit rips, so it shouldn't be taken like that. People browse the sections indescriminantly because of the aim for rarity and quality in equal doses :)

The entire site, forum, www and scifi have the same quality split with the same rules, and criteria and they've been operating like this, and seem to be favoured by the users for well over a year :)

Well to be fair, its not as clearly made here at scifi, there's a load of topics at hhah on the matter and a big discussion thread both on Advanced filesized usage, quality, rip technical details, etc.

Just browse through the stickies in the different sections for more crap :)
