dys-yo-pi-a
n.
  • An imaginary place or state in which the condition of life is extremely bad, as from deprivation, oppression, or terror.
  • A work describing such a place or state: "dystopias such as Brave New World" (Times Literary Supplement).

In the late 60's and early 70's there was a great influx of these movies and some, to my mind, are well worth having a second look at. Here is a small list.. please feel free to contribute!!

Please do not suggest post apoplectic movies, I feel these should be collected at some point under their own heading

IMDB wrote:A global war begins in 1940. This war drags out over many decades until most of the people still alive (mostly those born after the war started) do not even know who started it or why. Nothing is being manufactured at all any more and society has broken down into primative localized communities. In 1966 a great plague wipes out most of what people are left but small numbers still survive. One day a strange aircraft lands at one of these communities and its pilot tells of an organisation which is rebuilding civilization and slowly moving across the world re-civilizing these groups of survivors. Great reconstruction takes place over the next few decades and society is once again great and strong. The world's population is now living in underground cities. In the year 2035, on the eve of man's first flight to the moon, a popular uprising against progress (which some people claim has caused the wars of the past) gains support and becomes violent.

A Clockwork Orange (1971)
--
</a>

Image
IMDB wrote:Stanley Kubrick's striking visual interpretation of Anthony Burgess's famous novel is a masterpiece. Malcolm McDowell delivers a clever, tongue-in-cheek performance as Alex, the leader of a quartet of droogs, a vicious group of young hoodlums who spend their nights stealing cars, fighting rival gangs, breaking into people's homes, and raping women. While other directors would simply exploit the violent elements of such a film without subtext, Kubrick maintains Burgess's dark, satirical social commentary. We watch Alex transform from a free-roaming miscreant into a convict used in a government experiment that attempts to reform criminals through an unorthodox new medical treatment. The catch, of course, is that this therapy may be nothing better than a quick cure-all for a society plagued by rampant crime. A Clockwork Orange works on many levels--visual, social, political, and sexual--and is one of the few films that hold up under repeated viewings. Kubrick not only presents colorfully arresting images, he also stylizes the film by utilizing classical music (and Wendy Carlos's electronic classical work) to underscore the violent scenes, which even today are disturbing in their display of sheer nihilism. Ironically, many fans of the film have missed that point, sadly being entertained by its brutality rather than being repulsed by it.

Animal farm is about the uptake of communism.
Is as dystopian as they come, infact its almost perfect dictionary definition of dystopia:
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=dystopia
[quote]# An imaginary place or state in which the condition of life is extremely bad, as from deprivation, oppression, or terror.
# A work describing such a place or state: “dystopias such as Brave New World

just thinking, dystopian movies are basically where people are told/brainwashed into what to think/do/how to live they're lives by subliminal messages etc, correct? technically wouldn't They Live fit into that category? as it's about human beings being controlled and told what to think and do by subliminal advertising, i know as a rule its aliens doing it but the theory is still kind of dystopian i guess

@Kress

Dark City doesn't fit in my opinion. Isn't that film about a bunch of alien abductes living in a giant "maze" as some kind of experment to figure out the nature of individuality/soul... very cool film but dosn't really fit.

Total Recall, also a movie I really like but also I do not think it fits in this collection. I am a bit undersided about it really... I would love to put it in :) As I love the film but apart from the corrupt govner of Mars the world they all exist in isn't that bad... Then again it is close enough... When I do the update I might put it in... any other thoughts on this.

@Belmas

Nice sugestions there... i can not belive I forgot A Clockwork Orange and Rollerball (Carn version). Also my initial reaction to Planet of the apes was that it wouldn't fir but as I type this and think about it I am pretty sure it dose!! So I will add that as well. I hate the battle Royal films but they definatly fit in the collection. As far as La Jetee gose.... I plan on doing a collection of another of my fav Sci Fi movie themes.. time travel... and it would go in there....

@maxpayne2409

They live?? I wouldn't have thought that but after reading what you wrote.. I will add it as well.

Thanks for your sugestions...

I am still looking for a old Animal Farm cartoon...

<----- Edit

Fixed
Fixed the image link for brazil to a nice poster for it.

Added
Total Recall
They Live
Rollerball
A Clockwork Orange

Still to Add
Planet Of the Apes
Starship Trooeprs
Death Race 2000
The Island
Demolition Man
Battle Royal 1+2 (bah! I hate these movies... like series 7, but I guess it "should" be here)

Please keep the sugestions coming....
