Codec Sniper
Pulled off PD101

Codec Sniper is a tool that shows all of the Directshow, video and audio codecs on your system. There is a column that says whether the codec is "OK", or "Broken". You can delete any codecs that you know are old or that you don't need.

Operating System: Windows 95/98/Me/NT/XP/2000
License: Freeware

Website: http://www.utilidades-utiles.com/Download-Video-Codec-Sniper.html
Download: http://www.iespana.es/utilidadesutiles/downloads/codec_sniper.exe

What codec packs if any does everyone use, I've been having trouble with Ace mega codecs recently and cant find any decent alternative that allows me to play all formats.

used to use nimo codec pack until i realised that was the damn thing knackering up my comp...so best to stay clear of codec packs and just install the basic Xvid/DivX codecs and ffdshow IMO
I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

i have to use the ACE mega-ultra-smelly-pack (26mb big or something daft),. but only as it has the best quality DV code in it and I can't find it seperately.

This is strange, although the mpc bundled with the realalternative and quicktime alternative codecs are the same as the mplayer classic i used previously 6.4.7.8.2(unicode build), it doesent work properly.

I still have the old player and it is even named differently, mplayerc compared to the bundled version that is named media player classic.

Furthermore the new bundled mplayer classic doesnt play xvid properly(horrible pixelation).

I draw the conclusion that the bundles are in effect players on their own and are not enhanced mplayer classic progs that can play multiple formats. Also all the formats and files i had previously assigned to be played with mplayer classic are now associated with the new player that is not very good at playing anything else than .mov or realmedia files.

Furthermore there are audio-issues with playing quicktime video while using tv-out, it just goes silent after a few seconds..

Has anyone had the similar problems and found a good way to work around them?

Nice guide anyway! Found lots of good programs listed here.

:)
