'TV Guide': Paramount Cut Star Trek's Price
By Michelle
June 14, 2004 - 8:58 PM
UPN renewed Star Trek: Enterprise because Paramount TV substantially dropped the price per episode, a new report has claimed.

Next week's TV Guide, dated June 20th - 26th, has printed that according to sources, the real reason UPN renewed Enterprise was that Paramount offered to drop the price of each episode of the series from $1.7 million to $800,000. Reporter Stephen Battaglio called it "an offer [UPN] couldn’t refuse."

With UPN aiming for a female demographic, putting America's Top Model on Wednesday night along with new drama Kevin Hill, there was no room for Enterprise in its former time slot, which put it in competition with the more successful genre series Smallville on the WB as well as with ratings powerhouse American Idol. Paramount argued that UPN could afford to air a reduced-price Enterprise on Friday nights, when the network's ratings have been dismal.

It has long been known that Paramount strongly desired a fourth season for syndication rights, which become far more lucrative for a series that has produced nearly 100 episodes. Paramount will make up some of its lost revenue on a syndication deal, and more on merchandise sold to Star Trek fans.

"While only Trekkers would care if the show was canceled, Paramount knows it pays to keep them happy because Trekkers buy a lot of merchandise," wrote Battaglio. "Star Trek video games, books, dolls and other collectibles ring up about $200 million a year in retail sales, bringing in royalties of $20 million to Paramount."

Fourth Season Premiere Set for October 8

The fourth season of Star Trek: Enterprise will commence on Friday, October 8, two weeks later than most of the other fall premieres, UPN announced today.
Though third-season repeats of Enterprise will begin airing at Friday 8:00 p.m. starting August 6, UPN will schedule America's Next Top Model in that slot for the first two weeks of the fall season, which officially begins the week of September 20 for all networks. Once Enterprise debuts in the 8:00 slot, Model will move to 9:00.

Paramount Releases Details For 'Voyager' Season Four Extras

When the fourth season of Star Trek: Voyager hits the shelves on September 28th, fans can expect more character spotlight features as well as ones about the aliens of Voyager.

TVShowsonDVD recently released a breakdown of the extas and specs for the Voyager Season Four DVD set. Like the three previous Voyager DVD sets, the episodes will be presented in full screen format in Dolby Digital 5.1 with Dolby Surround sound. The seven disc set features 26 episodes and clocks in at 19 hours and 53 minutes total running time.

Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) get their chance in the spotlight on the fourth season set, with each character being the focus of a "Voyager Time Capsule." The Time Capsules will feature interviews with actors and creators from the show. It is not yet known whether Wang and Ryan recorded new, recent interviews for the Time Capsules.

As with the past seasons, there will be a "Braving the Unknown" featurette focusing on this set's season, presumably with interviews with the writers and producers. "The Birth of Species 8472" will focus on the creation and development of the aliens Voyager introduced, and "The Art of Alien Worlds" will detail the work of the artists who created the backdrop of the planets Voyager encountered. A photo gallery and a promotional trailer round out the set. Presumably, as with past Trek DVD sets, the season four set will feature Easter Eggs containing brief interviews and spotlights on episodes and characters.

To view the original report, please visit . The fourth season of Voyager is available for preorder from Amazon.com.

Enterprise On DVD

The Final Frontier
First, the least surprising news in the group: Star Trek: Enterprise is coming in 2005. We've had confirmation from StarTrek.com that Enterprise was in-the-works, after months of rumors from our good friends at TheDigitalBits.com told us all to expect this. Now we can tell you that Par's plans go well beyond the first season: while you'll see that release sometime in the first half of the new year, the goal is to space out subsequent season sets in the Summer (think July), early Fall, and pre-Thanksgiving. This means that you'll get all four seasons of Enterprise in time for the Winter holidays, which will surely give the series a boost should the folks at UPN decide to continue producing new episodes after the current (4th) season is up.
